Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov (Lenin) is one of the most important political figures of the XX century. The founder of the socio-political theory of Marxism-Leninism, one of the main ideologists of communism and premier the Soviet Union, formed the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party ("Bolsheviks"), which subsequently became the political decision-making center in the USSR. In 1917 he was the leader of the October Revolution, the result of which was the coming of the Bolsheviks to power.

The idea of placing the body of the communist revolutionary in a grave belonged to the workers and the members of the Bolshevik party. Joseph Stalin, who made a decision to create a mausoleum, formed the new religion for the gaining a victory proletariat. In the conception of this belief, according to the suppositions of the historians, the object of devotion and some kind of divinity was V. Lenin and Stalin - high priest and the vicar of God. In 1953 the embalmed body of J. Stalin was placed near the body of V. Lenin, but after a little time the cult of Stalin's personality was dispelled and his body was reburied in the Kremlin wall. The construction of the mausoleum supported the fragments of the ancient traditions of embalming the rulers, which existed already in Ancient Egypt.

The first mausoleum from wooden was made for the burial day of V. Lenin. It had a shape of the regular hexahedron, topped with the three-step pyramid. Almost up to 1930 the sarcophagus remained in the second temporary Mausoleum. The main difference was in that the three-step area was completed with the rostrums from both sides. The construction plan of the permanent burial-vault per se replicated almost completely the construction of the wooden precursors and in a shape looked like the ancient ziggurats. Designed in 1930 by the architect A. Shchusev, Lenin's Mausoleum represents the truncated step pyramid, which consists of five projections of different heights. The monumental construction is faced with dark-red granite, black labradorite and porphyry. From two sides the building is completed with guest rostrums.
