Commandant’s House was built in 1743-1746 by architect H. de Marina on the spot of the first wooden house for the fortress commandant. Commandant’s house got its modern look in 1893 when service wing was built as the second floor. In the Commandant’s House the commandant of the fortress lived, who was appointed by Peter the Great. The commandant’s family lived here as well. On the first floor there were the office of the Commandant’s department, the kitchen, the laundry, servant room and the stable. On the second floor there were chambers and habitable rooms of the commandant of the fortress garrison and the house church.
In the Commandant’s House interrogations of the prisoners were held, and in the Main hall on the 12th of July 1826 the sentence on Decembrists (participants of the Decembrist uprising on the 26th of December 1825) was passed. In 1917 there was the field staff of the Military-Revolutionary committee. Nowadays there is the exposition “History of Saint-Petersburg-Petrograd. 1703-1918” telling about the history of the city in the XVIII-XIX centuries.
