Military-historical museum of artillery, engineer and signal corps originates in 1703, when on the territory of Peter and Paul Fortress a special Zeughaus (germ. – military storehouse for armaments, uniforms, equipment, etc.) was built by the decree of Peter the Great for the storing and preserving old guns and cannons. However before the opening of Zeughaus different arm exhibits were collected all over the Russian Empire, which were delivered for the storing as extremely valuable trophy artillery pieces.
Originally the collection of Zeughaus was named “The hall of the memorial objects of the Main Artillery Department”, then the building was named the Artillery Museum. When the museum accepted the funds of the Central Historical Military-engineering museum and was included in the Military Museum of Signal Corps, the Military-historical Museum of Artillery, Engineer and Signal Corps was founded.
Nowadays it is one of the biggest military-historical museums in the world. Its collection amazes with the variety of exhibits, among which there are artillery pieces and ammunition, small arms and cold steels, military-engineering equipment, signal corps, battle banners, military uniform, works of battle-scene painting and graphics, awards and decorations as well as archive documents. Also pictorial, graphic and sculptural collections are very interesting. Among the exhibits there are works of art, which reflect the heroic past of Russian Empire, portraits of emperors, grand dukes, famous commanders, soldiers and officers. The halls of the museum are decorated with the pictures of famous Russian painters with battle scenes B. Willewalde, N. Dmitriev-Orenburgsky, A. Charlemagne, A. Safonov, P. Kovalevsky, A. Popov, N. Samokysh, M. Grekov.
