Tretyakov Gallery

The historical building of the Gallery on Lavrushinsky Pereulok houses the most extensive exposition of Russian art, which numbers more than 55 thousand of pieces. Nowadays, in the specious halls of the museum you may see the works of the greatest masters of different epochs, wonderful and breath taking ancient masterpieces and modern installations.

The history of the Tretyakov Gallery began long before the foundation of the all-Union Museum Association "State Tretyakov Gallery". In the middle of the XIX century the family of the merchant P. Tretyakov bought the house on Lavrushinsky Pereulok in Moscow and in 1856 Pavel Mikhailovich became the owner of the first paintings in his collection. In 1892 he donated his collection to the Moscow city and, thereby, he established the first public museum in Russia. Nowadays, the museum association includes 7 buildings, among which there is the famous museum-church of Saint Nicholas in Tolmachi.

In the ancient Russian art department you may see the works of unknown authors, as well as the famous icon-painters, such as Theophanes the Greek, A. Rublev and Dionisius. The hall of the XVIII - beginning of the XIX centuries demonstrates the paintings of well-known Russian masters: F. Rokotov, K. Brullov, D. Levitsky. The works of the representatives of the realistic art of the second part of the XIX century are presented here as well: I. Kramskoy and V. Surikov. The creative work of I. Repin is shown here in his work "The portrait of the old lady" and in many other famous paintings. The real pearl of the collection are the landscape works of the sea-scapes painter I. Levitan. In the outstanding collection of the masterpieces of the XIX-XX centuries there are the works of M. Vrubel, who became famous in almost all styles of the genre painting, and, also, the representative of the neoclassicism V. Serov.

Nowadays, the State Tretyakov Gallery held regularly the educational seminars for the schoolchildren of different ages and with the assistance of the modern painters. Children can take their first steps in the fine art during the lessons in the studious. The participation of the gallery in the project "Long Night of Museums" makes it widely available for those, who is interested in arts.
